Taboo represents the pressures young women deal with during the ‘coming of age’ process. Thus, I will explore how the media perpetually shames natural, and chosen female experiences which include, but are not limited too, getting their period, having body hair and taking birth control. All these situations should be regarded as normal, however they provide many young girls with anxiety, as they fear to be mocked and critiqued. Society regards women’s bodily experiences as taboo thus women are taught to be ashamed of their bodies and pressured into regulating them. I’ve therefore decided to capture some of these experiences in a humorous way. I believe that by mocking the societal trend of shaming human experience, it will provide a space for people to see these experiences in a more playful way rather than so seriously. The intention of my project is to send a message to women and men that getting your period is completely normal, it is not disgusting, having hair on your legs is normal, it does not make you look manly, and that taking birth control is not promiscuous, it is powerful. I believe that people should be in charge of their own bodies and hope to demonstrate that nobody other than you should be allowed to dictate what you can or cannot do with it.
